A Little History:
Phi Sigma Sigma was founded on November 26th, 1913 at Hunter College, CUNY. It was founded by 10 young women, who all wanted to join a sorority that would promote all women regardless of background, making Phi Sigma Sigma the first non-sectarian sorority, having a diverse membership and the ritual was not based in scripture. Instead the sorority focused on a commitment to sisterhood, excellence in scholarship, and selfless giving.
The 10 young women were:
Lillian Gordon, Ethel Gordon, Josephine Ellison, Shirley Cohen, Fay Chertkoff, Claire Wunder, Estelle Melnick, Rose Sher, Jeanette Lipka, and Gwen “Rae” Zaliels.
Mission Statement:
To inspire the personal development of each sister and perpetuate the advancement of womanhood.
Vision Statement:
Phi Sigma Sigma is a dynamic sisterhood of powerful women fostering uncompromising principles, igniting positive change, and embracing individuality.
